Whetstone Allotments are celebrating another great year of progress. Thanks to Barnet Giving’s funding they held their first outdoor classroom activities in April 2017 and took part in the national day for community gardeners, the Big Dig, where volunteers were able to plant potatoes and stock up the pond as well as enjoying a hearty barbecue. June’s warmer weather saw a visit by Kew Garden’s Grow Wild team who commended the allotment’s volunteers for progress made in developing native and bee-friendly planting. The team also received praise at the London Harvest Festival in September for their spectacular container planting. The year ended particularly well for volunteer facilitator Les Moore who was awarded a Local Food Growing Hero by community initiative, Growing Together.
